EMC Avamar Client: incorrect validation of certificate

Synthesis of the vulnerability

When a certificate authentication is configured, an attacker can create a malicious EMC Avamar server, in order to deceive the client.
Impacted products: Avamar.
Severity: 2/4.
Creation date: 03/05/2013.
Identifiers: BID-59621, CERTA-2013-AVI-288, CVE-2013-0945, ESA-2013-035, VIGILANCE-VUL-12753.

Description of the vulnerability

The EMC Avamar product can use a certificate based authentication.

An X.509 certificate contains the CN (Common Name) and SAN (Subject Alternative Name) fields, which should match the server name. However, the Avamar client does not perform these checks.

When a certificate authentication is configured, an attacker can therefore create a malicious EMC Avamar server, in order to deceive the client.
