vulnerability bulletin CVE-2012-3236
GIMP: denial of service via FITS
Synthesis of the vulnerability
An attacker can invite the victim to open a malicious FITS image with GIMP, in order to stop it.
Impacted products: GIMP, MBS, openSUSE, Solaris, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop.
Severity: 1/4.
Creation date: 29/06/2012.
Identifiers: BID-54246, CVE-2012-3236, MDVSA-2013:082, openSUSE-SU-2012:1080-1, SUSE-SU-2012:0963-1, SUSE-SU-2012:0966-1, VIGILANCE-VUL-11733.
Description of the vulnerability
The FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) file format is mainly used to store astronomy images.
The fits-io.c file of GIMP decodes headers of FITS file. However, if the "XTENSION" header is malformed, the fits_decode_card() function returns a NULL pointer which is then dereferenced.
An attacker can therefore invite the victim to open a malicious FITS image with GIMP, in order to stop it.
