Vulnerability of Ghostscript: buffer overflow via Ghostscript

Synthesis of the vulnerability

An attacker can create a PDF file containing a malicious JBIG2 image in order to execute code on the computer of victims opening the document.
Vulnerable software: Debian, Fedora, Mandriva Linux, NLD, OES, OpenSolaris, openSUSE, Solaris, RHEL, Slackware, SLES, Unix (platform) ~ not comprehensive.
Severity of this announce: 3/4.

Description of the vulnerability

The Ghostscript program displays PDF or PostScript documents.

A PDF document is composed of "stream" objects. These objects can contain pages, images, fonts, etc. An image can be compressed with the JBIG2 (Joint Bi-level Image experts Group) compression algorithm.

A malicious JBIG2 image generates an overflow in the jbig2dec library. This vulnerability may be located in the jbig2_decode_symbol_dict() function of the jbig2_symbol_dict.c file, but this was not confirmed.

An attacker can therefore create a PDF file containing a malicious JBIG2 image in order to execute code on the computer of victims opening the document.
