Vulnerability of Linux kernel: memory fragment reading with sys_get_thread_area

Synthesis of the vulnerability

The sys_get_thread_area() function does not correctly initialize memory before returning it to user.
Impacted products: Debian, Fedora, Linux, Mandriva Linux, Mandriva NF, RHEL, RedHat Linux.
Severity of this bulletin: 1/4.
Creation date: 01/12/2005.
Références of this threat: BID-15527, CVE-2005-3276, DSA-922-1, FLSA:157459-2, FLSA-2006:157459-1, FLSA-2006:157459-2, FLSA-2006:157459-3, MDKSA-2005:218, MDKSA-2005:219, MDKSA-2005:220, RHSA-2006:010, RHSA-2006:0101-01, RHSA-2006:014, RHSA-2006:0144-01, VIGILANCE-VUL-5391.

Description of the vulnerability

The sys_get_thread_area() function is used to return a TLS (Thread Local Storage) to the application. Thus, each thread can store its own variables in this zone.

However, this function does not initialize memory (coming from kernel space) before returning it to user space.

An attacker can therefore obtain memory fragments containing potential sensitive data.
