Vulnerability of libmodplug: buffer overflow via ABC Music

Synthesis of the vulnerability

An attacker can invite the victim to open a malicious ABC Music file with an application linked to libmodplug, in order to execute code on his computer.
Impacted systems: Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, Unix (platform) ~ not comprehensive.
Severity of this alert: 2/4.
Creation date: 02/05/2011.
Références of this alert: CVE-2011-1761, DSA-2415-1, FEDORA-2011-12350, FEDORA-2011-12370, FEDORA-2011-6931, openSUSE-SU-2011:0551-1, openSUSE-SU-2011:0943-1, VIGILANCE-VUL-10613.

Description of the vulnerability

The ABC Music Standard 2.0 format is used to describe audio documents with a text syntax:
 - T : title
 - X : reference
 - U : shortcut to music ornaments (Fermata, Mordent, etc.)
 - etc.

The libmodplug library supports the ABC Music format. It is for example used by sound applications such as PyModPlug, UModPlayer and VideoLAN.

However, the load_abc.cpp file of libmodplug does not correctly decode ABC shortcuts. A buffer overflow then occurs.

An attacker can therefore invite the victim to open a malicious ABC Music file with an application linked to libmodplug, in order to execute code on his computer.
